Build Your Audience

Create a quick and easy mini course to attract your first subscribers the smart way

What’s the #1 pain point for new course creators?

You’ve done everything the right way. You’ve researched your niche, validated your course topic, and you KNOW you’re building a transformative, high-quality online course. There’s just one big problem...

...who’s going to buy your course?

The biggest blocker to your success as an online course creator isn’t the quality of your videos or the design of your website—it’s the people in your audience. Before you launch your online course, you need ONE thing: an engaged online audience.

Luckily, you can quickly attract that audience with an easy-to-create resource: a mini course.

Learn how a mini course can grow your audience from 0 to 500 (and beyond!)

In this course, you’ll learn how to use one small piece of your expertise to create a free (but valuable) mini course. You’ll use it as a powerful marketing tool to grow your audience, and leave with a list of real people enrolled in your mini course and excited about buying your standard course when you launch.

The best news? You only need 500–1,000 subscribers to have a profitable course launch.

This course is for you if….

  • You want to sell an online course
  • You need to start growing your audience
  • You’re worried about who will actually buy your online course
  • You have an email list, but your subscribers aren’t interested in your course topic
  • You’ve already validated your course topic and started outlining your course. (If you haven’t, no worries! Make sure you’ve chosen the right course idea in Choose Your Course Topic.)

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a mini course and a standard course?
A mini course is a very short course typically offered for free. In this course, we’ll share exactly how to build and distribute your mini course to encourage people to sign up for your email list. (That’s the biggest difference. Mini courses are used to get free subscribers, while standard courses are created to attract paying students.)
What kinds of topics can you teach in an online course?
Anything! Our slogan isn’t just for show. We truly believe that everything is Teachable, from watercolor painting to Chinese metaphysics, from drone building to VR.
What if I already have a large social media following?
Well, aren’t you popular! A large social media following is great, but unfortunately, we’ve found that social media followers aren’t as likely to make a purchase as email subscribers. A social media following is a great place to promote your free mini course and attract those followers to your email list—which we’ll teach you all about! But we do strongly recommend building an email list to help maximize your sales.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone getting started on their first profitable online course, including total beginners and seasoned bloggers or coaches. We’ll help you build an audience from the ground up, even if you’ve never had a single email subscriber.
What if I already have email subscribers?
Wow, you rock! If you already have an audience of at least 500 email subscribers, you’re probably ready to jump ahead to "Create Your Course," another Teachable Academy course. That said, if you aren’t sure your audience is interested in your course topic, you can build a pipeline of potential customers using the mini course you create here.
Are there prerequisites for this course?
In fact, there are! In order to take this course, you must have a validated course idea and a rough course outline. In other words, you KNOW there is an audience willing to buy your course, and you know exactly what that course will cover. You can check both of those boxes in our Teachable Academy course "Choose Your Course Topic."
How long will this course take?
Building a mini course takes no time at all. You should be able to build your full mini course in one sitting. But we’ll be honest with you. The harder part is using that mini course to build your audience of email subscribers. That process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to -3 months (and beyond). Building an online course business may not be a get-rich-quick scheme, but if you follow our best practices, we know you’ll be able to run a 4-, 5-, or even 6-figure course launch!
What if I don’t have a website?
Great news: you don’t need a website to build your online course business. With Teachable, we build everything you need to run a complete course business, from the website to the course curriculum platform to the eCommerce.
Do I need a degree or certification to be a Teachable instructor?
Great question. You don’t need any special certification to be a Teachable instructor, although degrees or accolades certainly don’t hurt your credibility. As long as you have knowledge that someone else values, you have a topic worth teaching. (And believe it or not, some of our most profitable instructors aren’t “experts” by definition.)
What’s the difference between a school and a course?
Your Teachable school is the main website where your courses are hosted. Think of it like a college or university: there's the college itself (Teachable school), and then the individual classes that the college offers (Teachable courses).
Do you have any sample Teachable schools?
We do! In this course, we’ll actually show you a complete sample Teachable school that you can check out (for free!) You can also see some examples at
When does the course start and finish?
This is a self-paced online course. You can work through the videos and workbook at your own pace.
How can I access the course?
This course is exclusively available to Teachable instructors on the Basic, Pro, and Business plans. Upgrade at to unlock access.
