Create Your Course

The busy beginner’s guide to crafting a professional, high-quality online course you’re proud of

Do you want to create a professional, high-quality online course?

With Teachable, anyone with an Internet connection and a computer can create a valuable online course. But if you’re like most course creators, you might feel concerned about exactly how to translate your knowledge and expertise into a high-quality, engaging course.

And you might have some specific worries:

  • I’m not comfortable on video—how do I get better?
  • What video equipment do I need, and how do I set it up?
  • I’m not a natural writer. How will I write good copy in my course?
  • Designing my course sounds intimidating—what if I’m not creative enough?

How do I actually create my course?

One of the biggest misconceptions about online courses is that they are 100% video-based. Actually, when you’re creating your course content, you can mix and match everything from videos and screencasts to PDFs, quizzes, and slide decks. It all depends on what works for your topic, and what makes you most comfortable.

Learn how to create an impressive online course your students will love.

In this course, you’ll learn exactly how to map out your expertise into a transformative online course. Even if you don’t consider yourself creative, and you have no experience with content formats like videos, slides, etc., you’ll leave this course feeling confident about your curriculum. (No tech skills required!)

This course is for you if….

  • You’re ready to build your online course on Teachable!
  • You’re intimidated about creating content and invested in the quality of your course
  • You’re not totally sure how to create PDFs, recorded videos, screencasts, slide decks, or other content
  • You know you want to create a beautiful, professional-looking course.
  • You’ve already validated your course topic and started outlining your course. (If you haven’t, no worries! Make sure you’ve chosen the right course idea in Choose Your Course Topic.)

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of topics can you teach in an online course?
Anything! Our slogan isn’t just for show. We truly believe that everything is Teachable, from watercolor painting to Chinese metaphysics, from drone building to VR.
How long will this course take?
The real question here is, “how long will it take me to build an online course?” It depends on how much time you have to spare and how complex your course is. Generally speaking, assume that it will take anywhere from 5-20 hours to build an online course, including shooting any video you might need, creating your content, and uploading everything into Teachable. If your course includes a lot of video, you may need to set aside extra time to write and review scripts, edit video, and get set up to shoot.
Are there prerequisites for this course?
In fact, there are! In order to take this course, you must have a validated course idea and a rough course outline. You can check both of those boxes in our Teachable Academy course "Choose Your Course Topic."
What if I've never recorded video before?
It’s much easier than you think. With our specific recommendations for the exact gear you’ll need at home, you’ll be up and running in no time even with no tech experience.
Is creating a course expensive?
Gear can be as expensive as you want it to be. But since we know you’re savvy and on a budget, we’ve included Teachable’s recommendations on everything you need to create your entire course at home - including video! - for under $100.
What if I don’t have a website?
Great news: you don’t need a website to build your online course business. With Teachable, we build everything you need to run a complete course business, from the website to the course curriculum platform to the eCommerce.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone getting started on their first profitable online course, including total beginners through seasoned bloggers or coaches. We’ll help you outline your content, plan what types of content you’ll need, and actually create your curriculum.
What’s the difference between a school and a course?
Your Teachable school is the main website where your courses are hosted. Think of it like a college or university: there's the college itself (Teachable school), and then the individual classes that the college offers (Teachable courses).
Do you have any sample Teachable schools?
We do! In this course, we’ll actually show you a complete sample Teachable school that you can check out (for free!) You can also see some examples at teachable.com/examples.
Do I need a degree or certification to be a Teachable instructor?
Great question. You don’t need any special certification to be a Teachable instructor, although degrees or accolades certainly don’t hurt your credibility. As long as you have knowledge that someone else values, you have a topic worth teaching. (And believe it or not, some of our most profitable instructors aren’t “experts” by definition.)
When does the course start and finish?
This is a self-paced online course. You can work through the videos and workbook at your own pace.
How can I access the course?
This course is exclusively available to Teachable instructors on the Basic, Pro, and Business plans. Upgrade at teachable.com/pricing to unlock access.
