Name your school

Let's talk about something you may have overlooked: how to give your online school a name. Notice that I said "online school" and not "online course." As it turns out, there's difference between naming your school and naming your course.

With Teachable, all of your online courses live inside of your online school. You'll have a school home page where all your courses are listed. It's just like a brick and mortar university, where you might have several classes and majors within one college. Within your school, you can have several courses, including minicourses, standard courses—and in the future, you may even have flagship courses.

Your school name should convey the theme of your courses, as well as your brand. For example, if you plan to teach several courses on photography, your course school name should probably have to do with photography. If you have a recognizable brand, you may want to use that as well. For example, you could use your own name, or the name of your business.

Here are some quick tips for naming your school:

  1. Keep it short. Less than 5 words is a good rule of thumb. Drone Flight School is better than The Ultimate School for Learning to Fly Drones.
  2. Make it memorable. Reading with Randle is a lot more memorable than Randle's School of Books.
  3. Choose relevant keywords. Are there certain words people use or Google often when searching for information on your topic?
  4. See if the domain is available. This isn't required for a teachable school, but you can always set up a custom domain, and if your brand and business grows, you'll want to own the Internet real estate.

Now name your school! If you get stuck, show your options to friends and family, or ask for advice in the Teachable Tribe on Facebook.
